New star ratings 'will reveal most dangerous roads to road haulage companies'
Date: 07 December 2007
The IAM Motoring Trust and the Highways Agency created the system, which it hopes will cut down the number of accidents - including those involving logistics and other road haulage vehicles.
At the moment, freight haulage professionals and other people involved in the logistics industry will only be able to view a summary of the data. The Highways Agency is concerned that it would come under pressure from road haulage companies to improve the most dangerous roads and it cannot afford to do this at the moment.
However, owner operators and freight haulage professionals, as well as other drivers, may be able to view the information about different roads' safety on their sat-nav systems in the future.
In news which will concern road haulage companies and other freight haulage professional, just 11 per cent of A roads and only half the length of motorways in the UK managed to achieve the top four-star grade. What's more, the data suggested that logistic drivers should avoid 40 per cent of A roads as they only achieved a one or two-star rating.
Neil Greig, the director of the IAM Motoring Trust, said: "The star rating gives responsible drivers a valuable safety tool. Good driving and driver behaviour are key to avoiding accidents."
