Freight haulage truckers threaten direct action over fuel pricesPopular

Date: 06 December 2007

Thousands of angry freight haulage truckers are looking to stage a major protest over high fuel protests, the Metro newspaper reports.

Campaign leaders say they will blockade roads and risk arrest, and believe they have the support of 10,000 truckers who are unhappy at the record high cost of fuel.

Just recently, logistics firms were hit by a 2p per litre increase in fuel duty which added still further to the burden of their operating costs.

The freight haulage drivers will blockade refineries and stage go-slows on motorways, which will bring back memories of the fuel protests of 2000.

"If we arrive en masse, the effect will be incredible," said Chris Hunter of the pressure group TransAction 2007. "It will be bigger and better than 2000 and we have got so much support."

At the current time, it costs around £1 per litre for diesel, with the price of a full tank rising to £450.

Separately, however, the Road Haulage Association has not publicly backed direct action.
