Haulage operators make big savings with FBP scheme

Date: 29 November 2007

Freight haulage operators using the Freight Best Practice (FBP) scheme managed to boost fuel efficiency and make a total of £190 million in cost savings, RoadTransport.com reports.

According to an impact assessment study commissioned by the Department for Transport, those logistics operators using the scheme saved £41,000 each, compared to £12,000 saved by others who were not members.

Also, awareness of the scheme has greatly increased since 2003, when only 13 per cent of operators knew of its existence. This year, 24 per cent of the companies polled knew about it.

The level of awareness increased most among larger freight haulage operators.

"The conversion rate from awareness to use is much higher among large fleets than other size fleets," the report stated.

"The larger fleets have the ability to save a greater amount of fuel per fleet than smaller fleets. The programme therefore could target a small number of fleets that can achieve a higher proportion of savings."

Fuel efficiency has become an increasingly pressing issue among freight haulage firms, especially in light of recent fuel duty hikes from which the logistics sector is not exempt.
