LHV trial is 'not imminent'

Date: 29 November 2007

It is far from certain whether controversial longer heavier vehicles (LHVs) will be allowed on the UK's roads.

There were reports this week in newspapers such as The Times that the government was considering trialling these large freight haulage vehicles in Britain, in the wake of a study into the potential benefits of such trucks.

However, a spokeswoman from the Department for Transport has played this down, telling Motor Transport: "The stories are completely speculative and we have no plans to allow LHVs.

"We haven't received the study yet and any implication that a trial will follow it is just wrong."

These long logistics truck have faced criticism from environmental groups, who claim that they will spew out more damaging emissions.

However, LHVs could reduce the amount of carbon emissions because they allow for more freight to be carried using the same size of engine.

As well as this, studies from Europe have shown that these freight haulage trucks could cut down road casualties and traffic.
