Hauliers face disruption on Forth Road Bridge in 2009

Date: 27 November 2007

Freight haulage operators in Scotland are preparing themselves for major disruption that will occur in 2009 and 2010 when repairs are carried out on the Forth Road Bridge.

Work on the bridge, which opened 43 years ago, will reduce the traffic flow to one lane in each direction for eight weeks in 2009 and for four weeks in 2010, causing huge disruption for freight haulage drivers.

The Forth Estuary Transport Authority (FETA) told the Scotsman: "These closures will cause widespread and significant disruption to the whole of the road network in the east of Scotland."

Logistics drivers will face lengthy queues when delivering goods between Edinburgh and the north of Scotland, and vice versa.

The work is necessary to replace the D-mag joints that sit underneath the carriageways, and which have never been replaced. The scale of the job means that significant disruption to haulage trucks and other traffic is inevitable.

Phil Flanders of the Road Haulage Association said: "It is hard to even begin to imagine how bad an impact this will have."
