Freight haulage driver takes snooze in middle of dual carriageway
Date: 26 November 2007
A freight haulage driver has been banned for driving for two years because he parked his lorry in the middle of a major road and took a nap.
The sleepy driver, Irishman Joseph Dignam of Liverpool, had missed a lay-by on the A55 dual carriageway in North Wales and decided to park his 38-ton Scania freight haulage truck on the inside lane of the road.
He was found by police when cars were forced to swerve to avoid his stationary logistics vehicle.
A court in Llandudno heard that he had driven for 14 or 15 hours in a day. He was banned for driving for two years and handed a 100-day suspended prison sentence. He must also take a licence re-test, pay £455 costs and do 100 hours' unpaid work, the Daily Post reports.
His argument was that his company would sack him if he failed to catch a certain ferry from Holyhead to Ireland, so he was forced to break drivers' hours rules and was tired.
