Freight haulage firms 'not monitoring fuel usage'
Date: 26 November 2007
Not enough freight haulage professionals are carefully monitoring their fuel consumption, an industry body has warned.
The Department for Transport-sponsored Freight Best Practice (FBP) group said that many freight haulage drivers are in fact doing nothing to check their fuel usage.
Programme manager John Hix told RoadTransport.com that hundreds of the freight haulage drivers his organisation has met with are still not measuring how much fuel they are using.
According to the site, the FBP's most recent impact assessment showed that over half the freight haulage operators it questioned have now taken measures to increase fuel efficiency. However, half of these have only taken a single action.
It also showed that freight haulage firms that have adopted FBP schemes made savings £190 million over the past two years - compared to £65 million in 2003.
Recently, the freight haulage industry called on the government to act to reduce fuel costs for professional drivers.
The Freight Transport Association said that the current fuel costs were severely impacting on the operating costs of freight haulage companies in the country.
