RHA joins calls for truck park
Date: 22 November 2007
The Road Haulage Association (RHA) has joined calls for a secure truck park to be created in North Wales, following the hijacking of a haulier.
After parking up for the night, the haulage driver in question was held at gunpoint and the vehicle taken.
The RHA's infrastructure manager has been working on a system called the Secure European Truck Parking Operational Services (SETPOS), which would see haulage parks meet security levels and be graded on them, and be staffed at all hours.
"There need to be more safe and secure stopping facilities for drivers on the A55 to prevent these incidents happening," Chrys Rampley said.
"Drivers need a proper place to stop so they can get the rest they need in order to drive safely on our roads. The Euroroute Secure Truck Park will be a perfectly located site for drivers to maximise their driving opportunities while staying safely within the law."
If planning is approved, the park would be located on the "strategically important" haulage route, the A55.
The Freight Transport Association has called the development of such a site for hauliers on the road, which is part of the Trans European Network, "long overdue".
