Police warn of freight haulage thefts on A303

Date: 21 November 2007

Officials in Wiltshire said that they were advising freight haulage drivers using the A303 corridor to be careful as it believes a gang of thieves could be operating in the area.

The warning came after a series of thefts from freight haulage vehicles. The first of these took place on the night of November 5th near Andover. In this case, the freight haulage driver was sleeping in his cab when a load of white goods was taken.

Then, on November 7th, a pair of thefts occurred. In these cases, the freight haulage drivers awoke to find goods including medical clothing missing.

The size of the loads of stolen goods have led officials to warn that the gang could be using another freight haulage vehicle to carry out the raids.

Detective inspector Mark Power said: "Police have placed signs warning of thefts in lay-bys along the A303 and have increased evening patrols of the areas.

"We are urging lorry drivers to take extra precautions when they park up overnight and be alert to the risk of theft."
