Haulage truck park for A55 welcomed
Date: 20 November 2007
A new secure haulage truck parking facility has been proposed for the A55 in North Wales.
The project, proposed by JD Owen Transport, has been heartily welcomed by the Freight Transport Association (FTA), which is lamenting the closure of many other haulage truck stops in the UK.
It will be located off junction 31 of the A55, a road that forms part of the Trans European Network (TENS), and is therefore seen as strategically important. Up to 60 trucks will be able to park there.
FTA policy manager for Wales, Ian Gallagher, said: "The development of a quality lorry park along the important A55 is long overdue.
"Drivers travelling to and from Holyhead are limited in the number of hours they are legally able to drive; therefore the present situation requires that they are able to stop and take breaks and their daily rest requirement.
"This is normally in the first appropriate location such as a lay-by. Unfortunately these are not secure and rarely come with toilets or washing facilities."
The necessity for secure truck parks was highlighted recently by the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO), which has launched an initiative to warn freight haulage drivers of dangerous lay-bys.
Police forces will be able to use trailers with a crime prevention message, which will allow haulage drivers to protect their loads by avoiding those spots.
