Eligible Engines List 'is helping freight haulage drivers prepare for LEZ'

Date: 20 November 2007

There are only 50 days until the implementation of the LEZ. From this point, freight haulage drivers using vehicles over 12 tonnes will have to meet the Euro 3 standards for particulate matter when they enter the capital.

Freight haulage drivers who take vehicles into the zone which do not meet the standards will have to pay a fine.

The FTA has said that many freight haulage companies are opting to be placed on the Eligible Engines List.

This shows a number of older engines that were built under earlier standards but nevertheless have very low levels of particulates. Vehicles on the list can have an additional VOSA smoke test to obtain a Low Emissions Certificate (LEC).

The FTA's Gordon Telling explained: "Whilst we have never made a secret of our opposition to the introduction of the Low Emission Zone, believing that there are better ways to improve air quality, we have made every effort to explore how to reduce its impact on our members and the industry as a whole.

"I cannot stress enough the importance of checking the Eligible Engines List to see if upgrades are really needed."
