Scottish freight haulage drivers call for fuel price regulator

Date: 19 November 2007

Freight haulage professionals from Scotland have called on the government to implement a fuel price regulator which would help to bring about certainty and stability for people involved in the logistics industry.

The Road Haulage Association's Scottish members in Edinburgh issued a statement which said that the recent price rises for fuel had adversely affected the freight haulage industry in the country.

"After careful consideration, the Scottish hauliers have unanimously agreed that we need a period of stability for every part of the UK economy," a statement from the freight haulage group said.

"The current high price of oil has had a serious effect on the competitiveness of the country. We urge the government to implement a fuel price regulator.

"Fuel affects every business and we urge all businesses and organisations to support our cause. We also ask the public to support this, otherwise we will have a more expensive Christmas."

In the past weeks, freight haulage drivers have seen the price of diesel rise to around £1.02 per litre.

Recently, the Road Haulage Association said that haulage drivers and others involved in the logistics industry needed to be careful about protesting the high cost of fuel.
