UK motorways 'are the worst in Europe'
Date: 15 November 2007
A new study has shown that the UK's motorways are some of the worst in Europe and that this is harming the operations of couriers.
Couriers and other owner drivers have been told that the UK's motorways are the most congested in the European Union.
The RAC Foundation's director, Edmund King, revealed that data at the Transport Times conference in London.
According to the report from the Road Users' Alliance, the UK has more cars per motorway mile than any EU nation, putting it in a similar league to Lithuania, Slovakia and Hungary.
The congestion and unreliable delivery times of the UK's motorway network is a serious problem for couriers and other owner drivers as it adds to their operating costs.
Commenting on the figures, Mr King said: "Roads in the UK are essential for 92 per cent of passenger traffic and 88 per cent of our freight.
"This reliance on the road network will continue even if public transport is radically improved. We need road improvements but we also need to question when and where we travel."
Recently, the government announced new speeding laws that will affect courier drivers. A report in the Times suggested that the Department for Transport is looking to introduce higher fines for couriers and other drivers who are caught at 45mph or more in 30mph zones.
