A prize has been awarded to the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) and the Highways Agency because of their efforts to reduce the number of accidents involving freight haulage vehicles.

The two agencies have been given a Prince Michael Road Safety Award because of cuts in the number of heavy goods haulage vehicles getting into accidents.

Part of their efforts have included giving Fresnel lenses to foreign freight haulage truck drivers, so that the blind spot on the right-hand corner of their vehicles are eliminated.

John Aspinall of the Highways Agency said: "Our staff are delighted to have won this award.

"It is a clear example of the benefits of good partnership working and our staff are very proud of the outcome, a safer and more reliable strategic road network in the south east."

Janice James of VOSA added: "We are extremely proud to have won this award and it is no less than our staff, and those at the Highways Agency, deserve after all the effort they have put into making this initiative such a success.

"I can assure you that this is just the beginning and we will continue working hard to make the road network a safer place."
