Two haulage companies were wrongly billed for London's congestion charge even though the trucks in question were nowhere near the zone.
The West Midlands hauliers, Jeavons Eurotir of Tyseley and Bentons Haulage of Coleshill, were inadvertently sent congestion charging bills, even though one freight haulage truck was in fact in Italy at the time, Motor Transport reports.
Both logistics firms had also signed up to Transport for London's (TfL) automated billing system (costing £10 per vehicle, per year), which was supposed to reduce the admin burden.
Now, the haulage companies will have to go through all their TfL invoices to check no other mistakes have been made.
Darren Jeavons of Jeavons Eurotir said: "It's wrong for the transport sector to be charged to take freight into London in the first place. But now they're charging us when the vehicles aren't even there."
Phil Benton of Bentons Haulage called the error "out and out theft".
The congestion charge in central London greatly adds to the financial burden on freight haulage companies operating in the capital.
