Welsh couriers and owner drivers are concerned that new government proposals could pave the way for pay-as-you drive scheme to be introduced on north Wales' busiest roads.

Measures set out yesterday (November 8th) by the government in its Local Transport Bill makes a provision for the Welsh Assembly to introduce a pay-as-you drive scheme on major roads across the country.

If put in place, couriers using main link routes such as the A55 and A483 could be forced to pay to drive. Assembly members would have the power to dictate the charges and decide if they are to be based on time of day, distance travelled or the size of vehicle.

Couriers, already faced with increased costs as a result of soaring fuel prices, could find themselves struggling to make a profit if more road charges are introduced.

Recently, the government signalled that it was thinking of introducing more urban congestion charging in the future. Any such move would certainly add to the operating costs of couriers and owner drivers.
