The Highways Agency has published a draft policy on motorway and roadside facilities, for a six-week consultation.
In compiling it, the group took into account the views of road users, industry and others. It will now give freight haulage operators, drivers and others a chance to consider the policy and make their views known.
It covers areas such as the location of motorway service areas, including the spacing intervals between them; signage at facilities and their standards; lorry parking; the provision and use of lay-bys; and service areas on trunk roads.
The Agency is committed to ensuring that service areas "continue to provide safe and suitable roadside facilities for road users to take a break during their journey".
These areas are particularly important for freight haulage drivers with loads, who need to take breaks on long journeys and have a secure area for their vehicles.
The policy can be viewed on the Highways Agency website, and comments should be sent to the group's spatial planning team.
