Thieves are stealing trucks and selling them for scrap, the haulage industry has been warned.
While in the past trucks have commonly been stolen because of the valuable goods contained within, it appears that crooks are now realising that they can sell the parts of the vehicles themselves for substantial sums, RoadTransport.com reports.
As well as scrap metal, thieves can also sell axles, catalytic converters, the gold in the wiring looms and wheel hubs for a profit.
Meanwhile, Andy Round of intelligence unit Truckpol warns that violence in freight crimes is on the up.
There was a 50 per cent increase in truck hijackings between 2005 and 2006, he pointed out.
The West Midlands Police have issued advice to operators on the Road Haulage Association website, to help them reduce haulage vehicle crime.
Advice includes training drivers in security measures, making sure drivers always keep their keys on them, keeping up-to-date records about trailers and other equipment, and putting security equipment in haulage vehicles.
