Liverpool freight driver Stuart Thomas has incurred £621 in fines and costs for using a 'ghost driver', RoadTransport.com reports.

A Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) prosecutor, David James, said that a suspect tachograph chart had come to light when the activities of drivers employed by Jason Byrne of North West Express, St Helens, had been investigated.

It was found that the handwriting on the chart was different to that of Byrne, and was similar to Thomas's.

If all the driving done had been properly recorded, Thomas would have exceeded the daily driving limit, as well as driven more than four and a half hours without a required break.

He was fined £140 with £481 costs, and left the company shortly after he was found out.

Driving hours for goods vehicles exceeding 3.5 tonnes are governed by the EU regulation 3820/85, although there are exemptions for drivers meeting certain criteria.
