A scheme has taken place in Yorkshire that will help people wishing to enter the freight haulage industry.

A group of Jobcentre Plus advisors in the region went to a logistics facility in Normanton and drove a modern lorry, visited a major warehouse, and tried out a fork lift truck.

Organised by members of the Yorkshire and Humber Freight Skills Group, Jobcentre Plus and the Road Haulage Association (RHA), the scheme allowed the staff to get some first-hand experience of the jobs available in logistics.

Skills for Logistics were on hand to give a presentation on the wide range of positions in the sector, as well as the training plans that support employers and employees.

The RHA's Geoff Dunning commented: "In today's labour market we need to make sure as many people as possible are aware of the opportunities that we can provide and the rewards of working in the logistics industry, and when Jobcentre Plus staff know more about us, they will be in a better position to advise their customers."

According to PricewaterhouseCooopers, the transport and logistics industry is enjoying above average growth because of "advancing globalisation, declining trade barriers and an increasingly mobile workforce".
