Scala Logistics is developing an environmental measurement system that will help the wider freight haulage industry.

Emissions from lorries is becoming an increasingly hot topic. A new report from the CarbonNeutral Company estimating that CO2 emissions from logistics vehicles including HGVs and courier vans amounts to 33.7 million tonnes annually.

As well as this, a low emissions zone will come into effect in central London from next year.

Now Scala is to design a system to measure the impact of a broad range of supply chain activities and provide an ongoing evaluation. Workshops will be held in order to establish relevant environmental measures.

John Perry, the company's managing director, said: "We are all aware of the environmental issues we are facing but from a logistics perspective everyone appears to be finding it difficult to establish meaningful measures.

"It is very important that we agree practical and relevant measures which can be readily collected during normal operations."

The initial workshops will be free, taking place in early November in Crick and Hemel Hempstead.

Meanwhile, the Freight Transport Association has stressed that emissions should not be curbed by way of high fuel duty, but rather by improving efficiency.

Many logistics companies are making 'green' improvements. Recently, Renault unveiled its new eco-friendly Hybrys truck, which runs on biofuel and uses technology that could make its way into freight haulage vehicles.
