Freight haulage drivers are being asked to obtain a copy of a new London low emission zone (LEZ) leaflet when they next visit an HGV test station, Transport News Network reports.
The Vehicle and Operator Services Agency is asking drivers to request the easy-to-read leaflet, which makes it clear how owners and operators can check whether or not their truck requires any modifications before presenting them for a reduced pollution certificate (RPC) or low emissions certificate (LEC).
The LEZ zone comes into effect for lorries weighing more than 12 tonnes in February 4th next year, and will then be rolled out to include lighter vehicles.
Those not complying with emissions regulations will have to pay a £200 daily charge or a penalty of £1,000 when driving in central London.
All Euro I and II vehicles will need to have either an LEC or RPC. Operators need to book up checks now, because demand is strong.
Tests can be booked by ringing VOSA on 0870 6060440.
The aim of the LEZ is "to improve air quality in London by deterring the most polluting vehicles from being driven in the area". It will be totally phased in by January 2012.
