Freight haulage drivers in Cambridgeshire need to be on their guard against thieves after a large amount of fuel was stolen.

At Heathcliff Haulage in Wisbech, thieves broke in and stole £3,200 worth of fuel from the tanks of 26 trucks on September 23rd and 24th.

Four weeks before that, £5,000 worth of diesel was stolen from the static tank in the same haulage yard.

The Road Haulage Association (RHA) is warning logistics companies to look out for criminal activity.

"Firms really need to be on their guard against this problem, said the RHA's Martin Dean.

"As well as businesses looking at stepping-up their security and looking at the option of fitting fuel anti-theft devices to trucks, there should be greater national provision of truck-stops."

He said that the closure of lay-bys on major roads was contributing to the problem.

"Vehicles need to be left in secure locations, but the facilities to do this are reducing by the month," he said.

Meanwhile, Heathcliff Haulage has improved its security with more guards and CCTV cameras.
