Renault has developed a new refuse collection truck that features an electric motor drive and could herald the future of environmentally friendly freight haulage vehicles.

The Hybrys truck has a DXi7 320hp engine that works together with an electric motor, which itself is charged when the vehicle brakes. The power generated by this kinetic energy is stored in the batteries and can help to power the auxiliary equipment, as well as the truck itself.

Renault claims that the system could result in fuel economy being improved by more than a third (35 per cent).

Other innovations evident on the Hybrys include front and rear cameras and an asymmetric windscreen, to improve visibility, and a pair of digital displays supplying the driver with useful information.

The lorry has an all-electric range of two kilometres, and its conventional engine is compliant with Euro 5 regulations. It runs on biodiesel and can be fitted with a particulate filter.

Commentators believe that technologies included in the truck could soon be making their way into more conventional freight haulage vehicles.
