VOSA to target haulage drivers using their mobiles

Freight haulage drivers need to be careful not to use their mobile phones while driving, because it looks like the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) will be specifically targeting them in the near future.

Speaking at the Commercial Motor Legal Seminar, the south-west's traffic commissioner, Sarah Bell, gave a strong warning that this practice would be clamped down on.

"There is clear evidence that using handheld mobile phones while driving poses a significant road safety risk," she said.

"There are no circumstances where it can be considered acceptable for vocational licence holders to be using handheld phones and we will suspend the driving licence of the individual for a minimum of 14 days if such cases are brought before us."

Managers need to make sure they don't talk to their drivers on their mobiles while they are behind the wheel too. If drivers are found to be talking to their manager the operators will be required to give an explanation.

Quite a good excuse to ignore that call from the boss, then, drivers…
