E-trading: How haulage firms and owner drivers can get round the postal strike

Date: 10 October 2007

Haulage Exchange's Transport News-feed provides the very latest news for the transport industry, owner operators and haulage companies. For the latest haulage and transport news, please visit the Haulage Exchange news page.

Logistics companies who rely on the Royal Mail to deliver their purchase orders and invoices may be worried by the current strikes, but e-trading can get around this problem, and Haulage Exchange can help.

Royal Mail delivery workers are striking over pay and modernisation plans, and the Communication Workers Union has threatened further action in the future.

Of course, this is creating serious problems for owner drivers and haulage firms who are worrying whether or not their invoices, cheques and proof of delivery documents have arrived on time.

However, there is a simple alternative. Haulage Exchange's Tramp system allows members to find ideal haulage matches online, with a simple transaction hub for each deal.

Members can confirm deals online and send orders using fax, email and mobile phones (getting round the tedious problem of postal strikes). They can input POD data online, and will receive an online record of the deal itself.

As well as this, Haulage Exchange has created a new system of electronic payment, which is not only safe and easy to use, but can also make significant cost savings.

Called "e-pay", the system allows everyone from individual owner drivers right up to the biggest haulage companies to save time, money, and - while the Royal Mail strike shows no signs of abating - worry.

They can clearly see every haulage transaction and can approve electronic payments online with the simple click of a button.

From the owner drivers' point of view, it means they can deal with queries at any time of day, even after the accounts department have gone home for the night, and can see exactly who owes who what.

As for haulage companies, they can reduce the paper trail and see what they owe or are owed at any given time.

Haulage Exchange uses the BACS electronic payment system, which costs less than sending a cheque in the post.
