The Welsh Assembly government has announced a four-year plan designed to improve the transport system in Wales and to promote an effective freight haulage system.

The Freight Strategy for Wales was announced by deputy first minister and minister for transport at the Welsh Assembly Ieuan Wyn Jones, and was welcomed by the Freight Transport Association (FTA).

It aims to give support to "an efficient, effective and environmentally sustainable freight transport system to support a growing economy", and was developed together with the Wales Freight Group.

"The Freight Strategy acknowledges the great importance of efficient freight movement, to the benefit of both industry and the people of Wales," said the FTA's policy manager for Wales, Ian Gallagher.

"We very much welcome the opportunity for freight operators and FTA to forge closer ties with the Assembly Government and with planners across the principality."

Bill Simons, also of the FTA, added: "The announcement confirms that freight movement is not an afterthought, but a fundamental element of transport planning for Wales."
