A quarter of all minor lorry accidents in Northamptonshire involves a foreign registered freight haulage vehicle, according to statistics.
Figures from Northamptonshire police illustrate that 25 per cent of all small accidents, and 13 per cent of all major crashes, involved drivers not registered in the UK, the Northampton Chronicle and Echo reports.
Inspector Matt Wright of the local road policing unit played down the importance of the figures, saying: "There is a proportional amount of collisions involving foreign HGVs on the road, but it is not a serious issue."
Separately, figures from the Department for Transport showed that more than 1.5 million foreign-registered powered vehicles travelled from mainland Europe to Britain last year, which represented a three per cent increase compared to 2005.
There has been a particular increase in the number of Polish, Czech and Hungarian trucks arriving, although the majority are from France, the Netherlands and Germany.
