The Freight Transport Association (FTA) has launched a new online discussion group aimed at freight haulage operators involved with transporting animals.

With recent foot and mouth outbreaks, the transportation of livestock in the UK has become a hot topic, and the Animal Transport Forum will look for anyone engaged in animal transportation, from farm deliveries to racehorses, to take part.

The main aims of the group are: to promote the exchange of information regarding animal transport; to help members of the forum with the transport of all livestock; and to keep abreast of the latest developments in terms of legislation and equipment.

To join the group, haulage operators should contact Ruth Norbury at the FTA on 07818 450414.

Peter Luck, of P and L Luck Horse Transport, will manage the forum. He said: "We hope that the forum will provide a practical and interesting exchange of information, news and know-how from throughout the animal transport community.

"I know that forums of this type operated by FTA in other sectors have proved very popular and useful to participants and we anticipate similar success in our own special field of interest."

Livestock haulage companies were hit badly this year. Speaking of the latest foot and mouth outbreak, RHA livestock manager Roger Wrapson said: "Just as livestock hauliers were breathing a sigh of relief that the August outbreak had been contained, they have been dealt another blow."
