The Department for Transport (DfT) has published some interesting statistics that give a picture of the freight haulage industry in the UK today.

GB-registered HGVs moved two per cent more freight within Britain between 2005 and 2006, from 152.7 billion tonne kilometres to 155.8 billion.

There was a six per cent increase in the total amount of freight moved between 1996 and 2006, but the rise was less than the rise in the Gross Domestic Product (which was 32 per cent).

Articulated vehicles weighing more than 33 tonnes have captured a larger proportion of the goods moved - increasing from 63 per cent in 1996 to 72 per cent in 2006, indicating the growing popularity of these haulage trucks.

As well as this, there has been an increase in the average length of haul, from 68 kilometres in 1980 to 86 kilometres in 2006. However, there has not been much of a change since 1995.

In terms of international freight, 1,513,000 foreign-registered powered vehicles travelled from Britain to mainland Europe in 2006, three per cent more than in 2005. The most frequent visitors to these shores are French, Dutch and German trucks.

There has also been a marked increase in the number of trucks coming from new EU member states, mostly from Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary.

Most of these freight haulage vehicles arrived via the Dover Straits.
