Residents of Sevenoaks have called for freight haulage lorries to be banned from using the town as a cut-through following an accident involving a truck.

The Sevenoaks Chronicle reports that an HGV smashed into a restaurant in the town earlier this week after it attempted to turn around. No-one was hurt, but the building suffered some broken tiles.

Mike Dorrington, who was driving, said he left the M25 because of a traffic jam on his way to Edenbridge.

"As I came up here I looked at the map and saw I couldn't go the way I wanted to so I had to do a U-turn," he said.

However, Andrew Smith of the Acorn Residents Association said that HGVs should be banned from the town centre.

"Basically my view is very simple. They should not be allowed to come through," he said.

"Obviously we're going to get big ones with Waitrose and Woolworths that need entry, but it should be access only rather than through traffic. We've got a nice bypass and they should be using that."

Town councillor Maurice Short also said that restrictions should be on place on big vehicles, unless they are delivering.
