Some freight haulage operators may find it difficult to obtain new trucks ahead of the London low emission zone (LEZ).

The new regulations come into effect for HGVs over 12 tonnes in February next year, but high competition from eastern European buyers means that delivery times for new vehicles have lengthened.

In fact, some delivery times for trucks that meet the necessary Euro 3 standard for particulate matter are stretching into next year. The Freight Transport Association (FTA) believes this could be a problem, with some hauliers being told their vehicles will not be ready until the end of 2008.

"If there is to be a problem with getting compliant, the best time to find out and put a 'Plan B' into action is now, not in January," warned the FTA's head of policy for London, Gordon Telling.

"Information on how to get compliant can be found in FTA's compliance guide, which is available online or in TfL's LEZ leaflet."

The LEZ zone will be gradually phased in between February 4, 2008 and January, 2012. Increasingly tougher emissions standards will be required to avoid a charge to drive into central Lonon. Cars and small vans will not be included, but larger courier vans will be.
