New figures have revealed which stretches of road in the UK have the highest number of speed cameras.

The A6 in Lancashire has 31 of the devices, according to traffic information company Keepmoving.co.uk - which will not be welcome news to couriers and freight haulage drivers in the area.

Critics argue that speed cameras are not the right way to promote road safety, often unfairly penalising drivers, including haulage drivers, who may have been driving perfectly safely.

Other roads with a high number of speed cameras include the A35 in Dorset, which runs from the Devon border to Christchurch. There are 17 cameras along this trunk route, yet there are still many accidents that take place there.

Responding to the figures in the Dorset Echo, reader Debby posted a comment: "So much for 'safety' cameras then. Just goes to show how ineffective they really are in the prevention or reduction of serious accidents. They're just a money-making scam!"

Britain has far more speed cameras than other European countries. While there are 5,562 fixed cameras in the UK, Germany has 3,108, Italy has 1,945 and Holland has 1,594.

Paul Smith of anti-speed camera group Safe Speed said: "Speed cameras have failed as a road safety policy," he said. "We must scrap the lot and move on to policies that will actually save lives on our roads."
