Couriers and freight haulage drivers should be prepared for fuel price rises over the coming months.

A fuel management software specialist has predicted that fuel costs will spiral for the rest of this year and into 2008, placing pressure on logistics firms for whom fuel costs are a major issue.

Andy Leech, who works for CFC Solutions, told RoadTransport.com: "It seems that once or twice a year fuel prices start to spiral due to external factors and fleet managers suddenly come under pressure to act - often from within their own company - and put some form of management control in place.

"However, as the fuel price headlines fade, so too often does the fleet manager's interest in the subject."

He advised couriers and freight haulage companies to identify those drivers who waste fuel, direct drivers to cheaper fuel outlets and check which vehicles use more fuel.

Meanwhile, a report by the Commission for Integrated Transport has been welcomed by logistics groups because it suggests that increased fuel taxes are not the way to tackle carbon emissions.

Improving driver efficiency and producing cleaner vehicles are better methods, the report ntoes.
