A haulage manager has managed to get a penalty mitigated by claiming that freight forwarders often under-declare the weight of loads.
Barry Edwards, the managing director of Manchester haulage firm Edwards Transport Services, was called before Rochdale magistrates for overloading a 7.5-tonne truck by 11.2 per cent, RoadTransport.com reports.
The truck had been carrying a groupage load and was stopped on its way to Wakefield in Yorkshire.
However, Mr Edwards said that the freight forwarder it was working with had under-declared the weight of the load, adding that forwarders often under-declare weights as it is in their interest to do so.
This is because they are charged less per load if they do this, he said.
Mr Edwards also said that his company had invested in scales costing more than £2,000 so that they could weigh loads accurately in the future.
Edwards Transport Services received a mitigated fine of £260, with costs of £148, after the magistrates said it had done all that could be expected of it.
