The Freight Transport Association (FTA) has called for greater investment in roads in the UK in order to improve conditions for logistics vehicles.

Speaking at a reception in the Scottish Parliament earlier this week, the group's national president, Andrew Haines, launched a report entitled 'FTA Transport Policies for Scotland', which urged the government to increase transport infrastructure spending.

Among the measures called for were an early start to the development of a new Forth Road Bridge, which will be invaluable to freight haulage operators in Scotland.

He also pointed out that a good transport infrastructure was essential in order to preserve a healthy Scottish economy.

"We want to keep moving goods and services in the most efficient way possible so that the economy continues to grow," he said.

However, he called attention to the pressing issue of climate change and the need for green measures.

"Like every other sector in the economy, freight and logistics must respond to the global challenge of cutting greenhouse gas emissions," he said.

"I am delighted to be able to tell you that our members have already prevented carbon emissions from rising despite still delivering the growing economy."

Better engine technology and greener fuels would help still further in the future, he added.

The FTA is also urging that the benefits of any proposed road pricing schemes be made clear.
