A vote among European politicians has revealed strong feelings about 60-tonne freight haulage trucks (otherwise known as "mega-liners", "mega-trucks" or LHVs).

Vehemently opposed by environmentalists, the trucks could be seen on EU roads in the future, albeit with strict regulations in place.

In a European Parliament vote, 577 MEPs were in favour of introducing strict rules for the use of such trucks, with only 52 voting against restrictions and 51 abstaining, RoadTransport.com reports.

The Parliament is also suggesting that they only be used on certain routes, and that existing infrastructure and safety regulations are always borne in mind.

Although the vote is not legally binding, it suggests the direction Europe is likely to take on the issue.

French MEP Gilles Savary warned that the use of LHVs could damage the rail freight industry, but Dutch MEP Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert has said it is unhelpful to greet innovative transport concepts in an aggressive manner.

Using mega-trucks would allow freight haulage firms to improve their operational efficiency.
