Freight haulage is invaluable to the West Midlands economy, and the wider UK economy, a fact underlined recently by Skills for Logistics.

At a meeting with West Bromwich West MP Adrian Bailey, Skills for Logistics (the sector skills council for the freight logistics industry) and local logistics firm Warley Carriers outlined its importance.

It was pointed out that there are 236,600 people employed in the logistics and associated industries in the West Midlands region, which is almost ten per cent of the local workforce.

In the UK as a whole, the logistics sector is worth £74.45 billion, and employs 2.3 million people across 190,000 companies - many of them freight haulage firms.

Nevertheless, more needs to be done to enhance the skills of those working in the sector.

"Logistics is a sector which is often taken granted," said Skills for Logistics' Ian Hetherington.

"The aim of the visit was to highlight the importance of the industry to those in parliament, and to provide Adrian with an insight into how appropriate skills development can impact on an organisation."
