The first low emissions certificates for the London low emissions zone (LEZ) have been issued by the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA).

Developed by VOSA, Transport for London and the Department for Transport, the certificates are designed specifically for the LEZ zone, which will require freight haulage operators and couriers to adhere to stringent vehicle emissions standards if they are to avoid paying a daily charge.

Kevin Crawford of Mullany's Coaches was one of the first operators to receive a certificate, with his test taking place at the VOSA Goods Vehicle Test Station in Yeading on September 3rd.

He said: "Although my vehicles will only be affected by the London low emission zone in July 2008, I am very keen to act early and ensure that they are fully compliant with the LEZ scheme next year.

"As soon as VOSA announced that they were taking bookings for low emissions tests, I booked in immediately and I am delighted to be on of the first operators whose vehicles have been issued with a low emissions certificate."

The cost of a low emissions test is £28, although they can be carried out for £17 at the same time as an annual vehicle test.

The first phase of the LEZ zone will come into effect in February next year, when heavy haulage vehicles of more than 12 tonnes gross weight will need to adhere to emissions standards.
