The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the US has acknowledged 48 companies that have joined the SmartWay Grow & Go program, which encourages the use of green fuels in haulage vehicles.

With green issues becoming a major concern around the globe, logistics firms in the UK are having to think more and more about switching delivery trucks to renewable fuels. This will become ever-more important as the London low emission zone (LEZ) is phased in.

The EPA's program, which was initially launched in October last year, demonstrates that the issue is a worldwide one.

Its aim is to convince a quarter of the SmartWay transport partners to switch to renewable fuels by 2012. By this time, even large vans weighing between 1.205 tonnes unladen and 3.5 tonnes gross weight will have to comply with tough emission standards to avoid the daily LEZ charge in London.

The first SmartWay tractors and trailers were displayed at the recent Great American Trucking Show, featuring advanced aerodynamics, idle-reduction options and tyres with low-rolling resistance. Together, these technologies can greatly improve fuel efficiency in haulage trucks and hint at the future of logistics in both the US and the UK.

Meanwhile, a recent survey by eyefortransport indicated that 69 per cent of supply chain managers believe that green issues will become more important in the logistics industry over the coming three years.
