Couriers and other motorists in the Rhondda region in Wales are set to benefit from easier travel after a new relief road was opened for Porth/Lower Rhondda Fach.

After a £98 million investment, the carriageway will allow motorists to access a large proportion of the Rhondda from the A470.

The road was funded by the Welsh Assembly Government's Transport Grant Programme and is eight kilometres long.

First minister at Porth Square, Rhodri Morgan, who opened the road, said that "it has provided significant local training and employment opportunities in the area, on top of the transport benefits".

Along the route there are 11 bridges, as well as a five-kilometre path to accommodate for cyclists and pedestrians.

The road was originally forecast to cost just £30 million and the overspend has come in for criticism. Mr Morgan has defended the project, however, telling icWales that it is a much-needed "gateway to the M4" for the businesses and residents of the region.
