Sun-loving truckers heading for service with a difference

Date: 30 August 2007

Haulage drivers feeling the effects of spending a rainy UK summer stuck in their cabs might be interested to hear about the new facilities at one service stop.

The owners of the Red Lodge Inn in Cambridgeshire have installed tanning equipment so the drivers stopping at a nearby cafe can soak up the rays on their breaks.

Jo-Anne Jones and Malcolm Sandells had already put in showers for the lorry drivers passing by, the Cambridge Evening News reports, and sun-beds were the next step.

"Some of the lorry drivers who stop in Red Lodge have used it because they get 'truckers' arm' from sitting in their cabs all day," Ms Jones told the paper. "Their right arm gets sunburned while their left arm is almost white."

As a 2005 report from Personnel Today found that lorry drivers "had little truck with national health awareness campaigns on diet and exercise", a healthy glow may be just what many drivers are looking for.

Not all are convinced however, as 23-year-old driver Richie Louks told the Evening News: "It's a good idea, but only time will tell whether drivers will use it."ADNFCR-1069-ID-18262910-ADNFCR
