New RoSPA driver head keen to be at industry forefront
Date: 22 August 2007
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accident's (RoSPA) new head of driver and fleet solutions is keen to play a part in the implementation of the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (Driver CPC).
The CPC certificate has been in place for some time for owners but the Driver CPC will be introduced for drivers of freight haulage vehicles from September 2009.
Simon Protano, the RoSPA's new driver chief, said: "It is an exciting time within the fleet industry, with preparations continuing across the EU for the introduction of the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence for bus, coach and lorry drivers.
"I am keen that RoSPA continues to play a major role within the sector and to be at the forefront of new developments."
He will also develop the group's training courses and resources for managing occupational road risk - a role that will greatly aid logistics companies.
Mr Protano began as a driving instructor with BSM and has worked at The Instructor College and IAM Fleet.
He also wishes to grow the number of volunteers involved in running local RoSPA Advanced Drivers and Riders groups.
Meanwhile, a consultation has begun regarding the finer details of the Driver CPC, which haulage drivers will need to complete a training programme to obtain.
