Courier drivers warned of Suffolk speed cameras

Date: 17 August 2007

Courier drivers in Suffolk need to be aware of a speeding hotspot on the A12.

No fewer than 876 drivers were caught breaking the speed limit through road works at Bucklesham over a five week period, with local councillor Guy McGregor pointing out that the figure was unacceptable, Evening Star 24 reports.

"The traffic management in place is there for good reason, to protect our workers from danger and to keep the public safe as they drive through the road works," he said.

A 50mph speed limit is due to be in place 24 hours a day over this weekend (August 18th and 19th) for further road works on the A14 at Orwell Bridge, with speed cameras there to catch out unsuspecting courier drivers.

Meanwhile, the founder of the Safe Speed road safety group, Paul Smith, has vowed to continue fighting against speed cameras after he suffered a heart attack.

His group believes that the cameras unfairly punish safe courier and freight haulage drivers, and that road safety should be tackled more holistically.

"Obviously I will take a necessary pause for the sake of my health, but I vow to battle on against bad road safety policy founded on speed cameras," he said.
