Consultation open on Driver Certificate of Professional Competence

Date: 16 August 2007

Members of the public are being invited to enter into a consultation regarding the new Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (Driver CPC), a qualification that all freight haulage drivers will need to take.

Owners already need a CPC but the driver version is being introduced across the European Union later this year for bus and coach drivers, and from September 2009 for lorry drivers.

In order to obtain the CPC, drivers will have to complete an initial qualification and complete 35 hours of approved periodic training every five years.

Various other proposals relating to the scheme are being consulted over and the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) is looking for members of the public to enter send their views online. This consultation period ends on October 31st.

The paper is available to view at the Driving Standards Agency website. The issues on which views from freight haulage drivers are sought include: flexibility in the initial qualification process; adjustments in the arrangements for periodic training; improved process for issuing qualification cards; and better compliance arrangements.
