Ongoing postal strikes prompt businesses to switch to alternative couriers

Date: 15 August 2007

The ongoing industrial action in the postal sector that is bringing benefits to courier firms in the UK shows no sign of abating.

This week postal workers belonging to the Communications Workers Union (CWU) forced the closure of 18 high street Post Offices on Monday afternoon in the latest round of the dispute. The Post Office wants to move many local branches into WHSmith shops.

Continuing action has prompted many businesses to use alternative courier services instead of the Royal Mail, which has endured a series of damaging strikes over the past couple of months.

On the UK Business Forums website, businesspeople are advising one another to use alternative courier firms instead of relying on Royal Mail.

"I've noticed when Royal Mail strike Ebuyer use Citylink for everything," writes Carl-CSNM.

And the CWU is pushing for further strike action in the event that the Post Office does not bring more to the table.

"In the continued absence of an improved offer further strikes will be inevitable," said a spokesman for the union.
