Postal strike called off

Date: 13 August 2007

The postal strike that has so affected courier firms up and down the country has been called off as workers and bosses seek to come to an agreement.

A series of walkouts by Royal Mail postal workers has led to many companies deciding to switch to alternative courier firms. Those that have benefited include TNT and Citipost.

However, the Communication Workers' Union (CWU) has now agreed to suspend industrial action that would have seen thousands of workers walk out at mail centres and potentially drive yet more customers to other courier firms.

The dispute relates to pay and modernisation plans that workers believe could lead to massive job cuts.

Royal Mail chief executive Adam Crozier and CWU leader Billy Hayes will now work to come to a meaningful agreement.

In a joint statement, the two parties said they would "commit to talks on all the issues between them, hosted and facilitated by the TUC. Both sides commit to reach an agreement by September 4th".

Should the talks break down, courier companies stand to benefit still more from the lengthy dispute.
