Study: Green issues important for freight haulage operators

Date: 08 August 2007

The importance of green issues in the freight haulage industry has been demonstrated in a new report.

A survey by logistics information provider eyefortransport questioned more than 250 supply chain executives in North America and found that environmental concerns were becoming the number one priority for many haulage firms.

With fuel costs being so crucial to freight haulage firms in the UK and the US, anything firms can do to be more efficient in this department is more than welcome. A recent Michelin study found that tyres under-inflated by ten per cent could reduce fuel efficiency by 1.5 per cent.

The new eyefortransport study shows that supply managers are concerned to reduce fuel consumption, for example by using green fuels, in order to reduce overheads.

In fact, 69 per cent of respondents believe that green issues will become more important to their logistics processes over the next three years, and nine per cent see them as being their top priority over the same time period.

Only one per cent believe that such issues will become less important over the coming three years.

Freight haulage operators in the UK are especially keen to 'green' their fleets at the current time because of the London low emission zone that is due to come into effect next year.

Heavy-polluting trucks will be required to pay a charge to enter the capital each day.
