Haulage drivers get rat-run fines

Date: 06 August 2007

Five freight haulage drivers have been fined for using a rat-run through a village in Yorkshire.

They were fined more than £300 each by North Yorkshire County Council when they flouted a ban that prohibited HGV drivers from using the part of the old A1 that runs through Fairburn, the York Press reports.

The road used to be a dual carriageway but is now a single-track road following the opening of the new A1(M) motorway. However, using the old road can cut journey times so freight haulage drivers have been tempted by it.

Andrew Pound, a councillor who represents Fairburn, commented: "That road is now a single track road and is not in any way shape or form suitable. It's a very small road and we have children crossing it.

"I absolutely welcome the county council doing the spot-checks and stopping the lorries going through. It's all signposted."

Councillor Gillian Ivey said that spot-checks would continue in the village.
