LGVs hijacked in West Midlands

Date: 03 August 2007

Hijackers attacked two freight haulage vehicles in the West Midlands last week.

In two separate incidents, on July 23rd and July 25th, the attackers struck and got away with the trucks, RoadTransport.com reports.

On the first occasion, an Austrian LGV driver was woken up in Erdington, Birmingham, to someone telling him there was a person under his trailer. When he got out he was attacked and his haulage vehicle was stolen.

On the second occasion, a driver saw his rear doors swing open when he was travelling near Willenhall. When he stopped he was attacked and put in the boot of the vehicle the hijackers had come from, then dumped in Cheslyn Hay, Staffordshire.

In both incidents the trucks were recovered, but without their loads.

In a statement on the Road Haulage Association website, the West Midlands Police have issued advice to operators to help reduce haulage vehicle crime.

Tips include training drivers in security measures, making sure drivers always keep keys with them, keeping up-to-date records about trailers and other equipment, and installing security equipment in haulage vehicles.
